One of the challenges with training for VCAP appeared to be finding
the personal time to dedicate to covering all the objectives in enough
detail. I thought it would be useful to have a portable VCAP home lab,
to cover as many objectives as possible and use when I was on the train \ plane etc and had some time.
I run for day
to day a Lenovo T400, Win7, 6GB RAM, Intel Core™2 Duo 2.4 GHz, 128GB
SSD, so my portable lab needed to be small, very small!
I started with VMware Workstation 8 within this I nested 2x ESXi 5.0 VMs each with 2GB
of vRAM, imported the vCenter Virtual Appliance 5.0 and reduced its memory down to 2GB. I set all NICs to be bridged and pickup external IP addressing and ensured all disks where Thin.
I configured a test datacenter within vCVA and added both ESXi hosts to it, then to give me some VM guests I imported the vMA and two TTY Linux VMs I was pleased to find this which is handy however the IP is hard coded so you need to change.
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
and restart network by running
service network restart
